Swansea plan Sigurdsson contract extension
Swansea City are planning to commence negotiations with midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson over a new long-term deal at the club, according to the South Wales Evening Post.
The Iceland star is currently on international duty, as his national side get ready for a tough Group F at Euro 2016, facing up against Portugal, Austria and Hungary.
However, when he returns, chairman Huw Jenkins has revealed his plans to try and get the 26-year-old to agree on an extended contract. He said:
Over the next few weeks we will be having discussion with Gylfi’s agent.
We will talk about the player’s thoughts and we will discuss his future with us.
Sigurdsson currently has two years left to run on his current deal at the Liberty Stadium, but after proving to be one of the team’s most vital performers, the Swansea hierarchy desperately want to keep hold of ‘The Iceman’.
The versatile midfielder was undoubtedly one of the Swans’ best players last season, scoring 11 goals and providing two assists, with only Ghana captain Andre Ayew beating him on goals with 12.
Sigurdsson has been linked with a switch away from South Wales this summer with Leicester City and Borussia Dortmund reportedly keen on the Swansea star man, however the Jack Army are desperate to see him stay put in the transfer window.
