Swansea City goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has backed the ‘quality’ Jordi Amat to fill the void that Ashley Williams left in the Swansea backline.

Amat helped the Swans to an impressive clean sheet against Burnley on Saturday, as the Welsh side opened their 2016/17 season with a 1-0 win.

Fabianski himself had a great game, performing two excellent saves to prevent Sam Vokes and Dean Marney.

Speaking to the Express, the Polish shot-stopper said:

Jordi Amat is a great addition – he is a big, physical presence, but he is also mobile and good on the ball, so he can help us through a difficult time.

Losing Ashley put the spotlight on the players in his position, but (on Saturday) it brought the best out of our centre backs.

We saw what Jordi could do when he played regularly at the end of last season, so we knew he was ready to step up. We know the quality that is there.

Amat signed for Swansea under Michael Laudrup in the summer of 2013 for a fee of £2 million. Since then, he’s often been an understudy in the centre-back position, but has always impressed when given the chance.

With Williams now gone to Everton, it’s now Amat’s chance to prove that he’s ready to be the Swans’ starting centre-back, and after a good showing at Turf Moor, the Spaniard is certainly staking his claim.
