Much has been discussed (or argued) between the Swansea City fans regarding the club’s summer transfer window.
Some believe it’s been a hugely underwhelming window, losing key players such as Ashley Williams and Andre Ayew and replacing them two with unproven talents.
Some think it’s been a good market for the Swans, breaking their transfer record fee for prolific Spanish striker, Borja Baston. Signing World Cup winner Fernando Llorente and Dutch international midfielder Leroy Fer were also seen as decent captures.
Much of the fans’ frustration are that the board haven’t done enough to compete with our Premier League rivals such as Stoke, Crystal Palace, Watford etc.
Seeing old Swansea favourites Joe Allen and Wilfried Bony go to Stoke was understandably very frustrating – two players that would undoubtedly have a great impact on the squad.
However, here, I’m going to rate the transfers Swansea did manage to complete out of ten, as well as a summary score of the whole window.
Fernando Llorente - 7.5
Llorente was originally seen as a brilliant signing. However, he hasn’t enjoyed a great start at the Liberty Stadium, but we’ll have to give him time to adapt.
Borja Baston - 9
The Spaniard was a fantastic signing, and one that could thrive in the Premier League. He’s been injured for the first few games, but I for one cant wait for him to return and to see what he can do.
Leroy Fer - 7.5
I’ve got to admit; I’d be left disappointed I we didn’t sign Fer permanently after a decent loan spell last season. A strong presence, he has a few things to work on, but overall, I feel Fer’s a good signing.
Mike van der Hoorn - 7
We can’t really judge van der Hoorn yet, as we haven’t seen him too much. A young defender who signed for a pretty cheap deal, not catastrophic by any means.
Alfie Mawson - 7
Not an ideal replacement for Ashley Williams. However, the lad does have huge talent and could become a star in the future. We’ll have to wait and see.
Mark Birighitti - 5
Six goalkeepers at the club… WHY? A pretty pointless signing, but nothing against the Australian keeper.
Overall score - 7
It’s not as good as many other teams in the top-flight, and we could struggle this season, compared to the likes of Stoke, who’s signings could easily take them to a top-half finish.
Not absolutely catastrophic, though. We’ve still got a decent squad that should escape relegation with a bit to spare. Not exactly where – as fans – we’d like to be aiming towards though, escaping relegation. A bit more ambition please Levien, Kaplan and Jenkins.
