I’ve been calling out for Jay Fulton to have a real run in the Swansea City first-team for ages, and it was great to see him handed a start against Everton.

The Scottish midfielder has never let the Swans down when performing at any level and after an impressive pre-season, I was hoping he’d have more than two Premier League appearances by now.

However, after a substitute appearance against Liverpool and two showings in the EFL Cup – where he scored in the 4-1 win over Peterborough – Fulton was given a start at Goodison Park last Saturday and didn’t disappoint one bit.

The 22-year-old was strong, calm on the ball and didn’t back down despite lining up against a very decent Everton midfield in James McCarthy, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Ross Barkley.

He defended very well and kept to his position too, which is something that has let the Swans down massively in recent times. To be quite frank, Fulton is a much better option than Ki Sung-Yueng in the holding midfield, as he actually has a bit of fight in him and can win 50/50s and second balls.

He’s also a better option than Fer in the holding position as he can actually hold his position and not venture into the opposition box and stay there for five minutes whilst leaving a huge gap in the middle (sorry Ki and Fer). He also reads the game brilliantly in midfield, has a tremendous understanding of what’s around him and knows when to play the right pass.

Hopefully Bob Bradley has seen that Fulton can offer much more stability in midfield and along with Jack Cork and Leon Britton, that’s our holding midfielders sorted for the time being. I’d leave Ki and Fer play in a more advanced role – as it suits them better.

I’d keep Fulton and Cork in the starting XI for Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace and who knows, Fulton could be just what we need in this relegation scrap – a player who can fight, win the ball and above all, plays for the shirt. Keep it up, Jay!
